CATALYZING SOLUTIONS FOR OCEAN HEALTH
Ocean Visions was born of the recognition that, too often, the diverse sectors and disciplines needed to design and advance effective solutions are siloed and disconnected.
In 2019, a group of leading ocean research and academic institutions came together to create Ocean Visions, bridging these siloes and accelerating multisector initiatives to design, test, and develop new solutions at the ocean-climate nexus.

Ocean Visions Mission
“Our mission is to develop innovative and durable solutions to complex challenges facing our ocean.”
Our ocean is under threat from a host of pressures, including overfishing, plastic pollution, and dead zones. But no threats loom larger than those caused by the greenhouse gas pollution causing global climate change.
Greenhouse gas pollution is particularly hard on the ocean, driving overheating and acidification.
Ocean heating is in turn causing deoxygenation, sea level rise, and disruption of critical marine ecosystem functions and services.
At the same time, the ocean’s absorption of carbon dioxide is increasing its acidity. In order to address these challenges, the world needs to generate and scale innovative approaches and solutions much more effectively and quickly.
Ocean Visions imagine a world where interdisciplinary design, innovation, and co-creation of equitable solutions foster a thriving ocean for all that depend on it.
Ocean Visions’ Goals
Ocean Visions connects oceanographic and academic research institutions, marine resource managers, conservation organizations, investors, entrepreneurs, and governments to collaborate on the development, testing, and deployment of scalable and equitable solutions in the ocean-climate nexus.
Ocean Visions focus on three challenges to develop viable solutions:
Build momentum and action to address the existential threats to the ocean created by global climate disruption.
Support prolific imagination, innovation, development, and demonstration of solutions that can address and hopefully exceed the scale and pace of negative change in the ocean.
Build and engage a vibrant and diverse global community of “solvers” and “makers” committed and supported to tackling and solving these big ocean problems.
The Ocean Visions Network
The Ocean Visions Network creates a framework to link people and resources from research and academic institutions with expertise from other key sectors to develop, test, and evaluate innovative solutions to reverse ocean threats.
