People-powered solutions to saving our oceans.
By 2050 there will be more plastic by weight than fish in our oceans and the rate of plastic going into our oceans is only increasing. Yet up to 80% of the world's ocean plastic comes from a lack of waste management infrastructure in coastal communities around the world.
Ocean Bottle enables anyone that gives a damn about this planet the opportunity to turn off the ocean plastic tap by addressing the root of the problem and empowering consumers to play a role in reversing this alarming trend. Each one of The Ocean Bottles sold funds the collection of 1000 plastic bottles from entering the oceans by paying plastic collectors 3x the amount they would normally earn for plastic collection and investing in recycling infrastructure at the top sources of ocean plastic. This collected plastic is resold as ‘Social Plastic’ with project partner, the Plastic Bank.
Many companies tack on corporate responsibility as an added layer to their business, or donate a vague “percentage of profits” to various causes. Don't get us wrong, that impact is helpful, but this company is focused on sustainability to the core. The team at Ocean Bottle are committed to transparency around their impact and have engineered a defined impact per product which is non-negotiable.
To secure the collection of plastics as an economic model, most of the funding goes to workers collecting the otherwise ocean bound plastic, while 30% of the funding is donated to increasing plastic collection infrastructure.
Their recent brand film, produced by friends and OCL storytellers Lucy and Joya exists to raise awareness about the global waste issue, to connect people to it on a human level, and serve as a call to action to come together to tackle our waste management problem. The film follows a Balinese woman, Kuntari, on the front lines of our ocean plastic crisis who brings a message of hope as to how we can turn off the ocean plastic tap.
The world needs to drastically reduce its plastic production and we need to reduce our single-use plastic. Beach cleanups are helping to save our seas but Ocean Bottle believe that to truly have an impact right now on the crisis we need to stop plastic before it hits our oceans, to put a value on collecting that plastic, and then connect as many people to this solution as possible.
