Callum Evans | Photographer | Freediver | South Africa
Growing up in Cape Town, Callum was drawn to the sea from a young age. He soon took his passion for photography underwater and began to document the seascapes and wildlife of his local coasts and beaches. Today, after completing a degree in Environmental and Geographical Science, he has turned his love of the sea and raw photographic talent towards conservation and the protection of our oceans.
What is a typical day like for you?
Depending on the weather, I normally go for a morning hike and then spend the afternoon freediving in False Bay.
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
We travelled a lot when I was young and I was exposed to many different places, from the volcanoes in Chile to the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Visiting these wild places instilled a deep love of nature in me and a desire to explore it to its furthest limits.
What are the biggest sources of inspiration in your work?
Some of my greatest heroes are David Attenborough, Ian Player, Jane Goodall, Lawrence Anthony and Alan Rabinowitz. In South Africa, I get inspired on a daily basis by the passion of the people around me, in particular ocean conservationists like Shamier Magmoet and Danel Wentzel. In terms of photography, the work of Gerry Van Der Walt, Marlon Du Toit and Jonathan & Angela Scott constantly inspires me to keep improving my skills as a photographer.
What path did you choose after leaving school?
I went on to study Environmental and Geographical Science at the University of Cape Town, first with a three-year undergraduate degree and then an Honours degree. Currently, I'm looking for opportunities in photography and conservation while volunteering with local conservation initiatives.
What would you most like to change in the world today?
How we view and interact with our world and each other.
What brings you the most joy?
Being in a truly wild place (especially the bushveld) with a small group of friends.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
Always leave a place better than when you found it.
