Finnegan Crouch | Underwater Photographer | Filmmaker | Marine Researcher | UK | Cornwall
Finn has always been drawn to stories, becoming absorbed in extreme environments and tales from a young age. Yet, he first moved from listening to stories to writing them when he was about 18.
A few years down the line, Finn finds himself weaving tales of conservationists and the awe-inspiring animals they protect through his photography.
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
When I was a kid, all I can remember is touring around, never staying in one place for longer than a year. This adventure introduced me to people from many backgrounds and of many lives. I guess this always drew me to the way that animals interact, both lifelong bonds and fleeting chance encounters.
That desire to adventure and to be a conservationist came from seeing much of the world through my childhood and I keep that same energy and mindset to this day!
What path did you choose after leaving school?
I went to University to study Marine and Natural History. This allowed me to develop my skills and character and finally engage in the kind of life that I wanted to build. Now I have left uni, and all I want to do is explore and do some good within the water world!
What/who currently inspires you?
My heroes have always been those who put the world first and have fun while doing it. Hearing my families tales of exploration always inspired me, and I keep that with me to this day. My Grandad used to say "velocity made good" - meaning that as long as you are always going forward to your goal it doesn't matter the speed in which you get there
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
I feel that with the rapid rise of human assisted climate change, a shift of attitude from the scientific and general community needs to happen.
As a scientific and animal behaviour communicator I see the middle ground between the policy makers, the researchers and the people. We are all wanting and feeling the same things but need to shift our language to match. That was we can all better our local ecosystems and work with the Earth, not against it.
Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, and that you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?
Anything on the Waterbear Network page !!!
What legacy do you hope to leave?
As I am still young it is hard to think of what I will leave behind. Yet, all I hope to do is inspire those around me with the intense passion I feel. Leaving an impression of hope wherever I go.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?
Just dive in! Really go for it and try not to take any self doubt with you. I am new to the game of life and it has many twists and turns - just try remember - 'Velocity Made Good'
