George Carr | Underwater Photographer | Australia

Inspired by life and fuelled by passion, companied with an interest for photography which stems from childhood, George Carr decided to leave his 9-5 to pursue his traveling dreams, and recently relocated to sunny Australia. Now beginning to settle down near the beautiful Ningaloo Reef, he has secured his first professional job as a photographer working on the boats through the Whale Shark and Humpback Whale season this year.

What is a typical day like for you?

The answer to this question would have been very different 24 months ago when I was living and working in the north east of England in a corporate job. My decision to fly across the world hunting for adventure was one of the best I’ve ever made. I’ve been so lucky to spend the last two years exploring and photographing the landscapes and wildlife that Australia has to offer…and my word it did not disappoint! Since October my adventures have been mostly underwater as I found myself based on the stunning Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. A typical day here for me is heading out on the boat just after sunrise with all my photography gear at the ready. No day out here disappoints, it is truly magical at times and every day is different. From an abundance of colourful corals and fish, through to elegant Manta Rays and magnificent Tiger Sharks. Being underwater photographing these marine animals is an indescribable feeling. Once back on land, between evening bird watching and stunning sunsets there’s never a dull day here.

When did you first pick up a camera and start shooting underwater?

Photography is something I have had a passion for from a young age and have vivid memories of my dads old film camera that he probably didn’t dare let me near! Unfortunately photography is not something I dedicated lots of my time on until recent years. My trip to Australia has without a doubt helped rekindle this love of mine….my girlfriend might say ‘obsession’! Apart from the odd time using a GoPro my first time underwater with my camera was actually when I arrived on the Ningaloo only 4 months ago (Oct 21). You can only imagine my excitement when I was recently asked to be a professional photographer right here on the reef. Lots still to learn but I can’t wait for what’s to come.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

Wow, that’s a tough question. I can honestly say I had the best upbringing I could imagine and so many amazing memories. Family and friends means the absolute world to me which made my decision to fly across the world a BIG one. My family has only ever been supportive and encouraged me throughout my childhood and adult life and this was no different when I told them I was leaving my job to fly to the other side of the world. Their love and support is definitely the thing that has impacted me the most.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

After leaving school I, like many, went to University and came out the other side with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Science, which led me down a path into the corporate world. My experience of this was in fact a pretty positive one but there was always something in the back of my mind wanting a bit more from life.

What do you value most in life?

Family, friends & adventure.

What brings you the most joy?

The feeling of being completely in the moment when out in nature, when you’re completely switched off to the rest of the world is the thing that gives me the most joy. For me this is what being a photographer is all about.

Who/what currently inspires you?

Anyone who has a passion or is excited about our natural world inspires me.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

There are several major environmental issues that affect our planet today (pollution, overpopulation, loss of biodiversity, deforestation to name a few). I'd love to be able to help spread awareness of these and more importantly what can be done to reduce their negative impact.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?

My favourite books/docos are inspirational true stories that make you want to get out there and make the most of your life. The most recent that springs to mind is ’14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible’. A truly mind blowing story of fitness and inner strength about a Nepali mountaineer called Nimsdai Purja. If this doesn’t give you that ‘get up and go’ feeling I don’t know what will.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

Photography is not only a passion for me, it also helps me get out into nature and spend time appreciating that free feeling. If I can help inspire people to do the same then I'll be happy.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?
My biggest bit of advice would be to focus on your passion and do it because you love it and not for the number likes you have on social media. Stay true to yourself.
