Jason Anton Smith | Ocean Photographer | Oahu Hawai'i
Originally from Northwest Florida, Jason Smith moved to Oahu, Hawaii in 2013. In awe of the natural beauty of the landscape and Ocean life surrounding the islands, he initially began capturing photos to share with his family & friends. Photography quickly evolved from a hobby to a passion, with Jason’s focus revolving around the ocean and everything related to it.
One of the events that shaped his love of what lies below the surface was an open water shark dive off the coast of the North Shore organized by his wife as a Father's Day gift. He subsequently spent almost every weekend after in the Ocean looking to capture this jaw-dropping underwater world Jason hopes to inspire viewers to get out and create experiences to remember.
What is a typical day like for you?
Wake up around 6am when I don’t have to work and check the surf forecast and weather. Depending on the forecast I'll decide what and where to shoot. Shoot for a few hours and then head back home to spend time with my family. Later in the evening, I'll edit photos and get equipment ready for the next day of shooting.
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
Growing up in Northwest Florida near the Gulf allowed me access to beautiful emerald waters and ocean wildlife.
When did you first pick up a camera and start shooting underwater?
Picked up a GoPro 3-4 years ago and never looked back.
What/who currently inspires you?
Anyone out there living there lives to the fullest while respecting the Earth and the people in it. I get inspiration from other photographers and traveling around the world experiencing different cultures and habitats.
What path did you choose after leaving school?
Military. It helped me travel to places I may have not voluntarily gone on my own and places I've only dreamt of going.
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
For people to realize the negative effect our actions have on the environment and to treat it better, and its creatures. I'd like to stop the killing of sharks and other ocean wildlife by bycatch and for medicinal/status purposes.
Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?
Blackfish, The Cove, Saving Jaws, Racing Extinction, Planet Ocean, Shorebreak, My Octopus Teacher and almost any Nat Geo show.
What brings you the most joy?
Being with family or in the ocean. It’s perfect when they come together!
What legacy do you hope to leave?
As someone who treated everyone and everything with love and respect and hopefully inspired others to do the same.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?
Tell YOUR story based off what you feel and not what you think people want to hear.
