Krista Espino | Photographer | Corsica, France
Inheriting her parent’s adventurous spirit, Krista was destined to live a bohemian lifestyle.
Krista has been a passionate photographer from a young age, and does not confine to one style or genre. Her work perfectly encapsulates her free spirit, exploring the human connection to Earth, in particular drawing inspiration from the oceans and feminine divinity.
What is a typical day like for you?
A typical summer day is spent at the beach with my family, constantly in the water and often shooting with models.
When did you first pick up a camera and start shooting underwater?
My fascination with photography started very young, but it wasn't until 2012 when I was able to buy myself and underwater housing and could finally capture what I've always wanted to.
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
My parents brought me camping since I was a baby and always took my siblings and I to new, incredible places. I think this early introduction of exploring has given me an adventurous spirit.
What path did you choose after leaving school?
I worked as a freelance photographer, shooting mostly weddings but always trusting that my passion for the sea would lead my photography back to where I wanted it to be.
What do you value most in life?
My husband and two young sons, the ocean, our incredible earth and our connection to it.
What brings you the most joy?
Watching my boys discover the thrills and wonder of life on Earth.
Who/what currently inspires you?
The list is endless. Many photographers (both current and past), Abstract art, music, dreams, the light at the end of the day... just to name a few.
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
Plastic, overfishing, overconsumption and waste. I believe it is critical to educate our youth now, as it is their unfortunate inheritance. These new waves of youth activists are so inspiring and I believe and have hope in a brighter future once this generation starts to take office.
Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?
Chasing Coral, Seaspiracy, Mission Blue and A Plastic Ocean to name a few.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
A deeper admiration for the sea and its inhabitants.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?
Follow what you love.
