Meli Errington | Biologist | Nature & Ocean Photographer | UK
Meli is a biologist and nature photographer from the UK. Growing up in the countryside and being in and around nature drove Meli to study biology and travel Asia.
She hopes by capturing nature both above and below the ocean’s surface, she can raise awareness for the vulnerability of the natural world.
Meli hopes to work on a project that documents the human impact on marine and terrestrial tropical ecosystems in the future, in Costa Rica. Here she hopes to tell a story of how ecosystems that support a high diversity of life such as rainforests and reefs, are being affected by human activities. We are looking forward to Meli capturing the beauty of these ecosystems as well as their fragility.
When did you first start your storytelling journey?
In May 2022.
What path did you choose after leaving school?
After leaving school I took a year out and travelled around South East Asia, India and Nepal before heading back to the UK to study Biology at university.
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
I was very lucky to grow up in the countryside surrounded by green hills and little streams. Building dens, climbing trees, and wading down streams was the best way to pass the time and I loved doing so with my brother and sisters. Moving to Scotland for university, it is the sea swims, camping, and adventures in the stunning highlands with friends that I remember most fondly.
These wild places were so peaceful yet being in them made you feel like an adventure could happen at any moment; this is what I truly loved about them. My favourite memories all involve being somewhere wild with friends and family, and this inspires me to pursue the kind of lifestyle where these moments are the norm.
What/who currently inspires you?
Cristina Mittermeier (@mitty) has always been a huge inspiration for me. Aesthetically, her work is incredible, and her use of photos to inspire wider conservation/climate action is something I’ve always been in awe of.
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
I would like to help raise awareness for the vulnerability of the natural world with increasing human pressures, and change how we prioritise the environment when making decisions that affect it.
