Sunny Breger | Photographer | Filmmaker | Portugal
Sunny Breger is a filmmaker and photographer based between Portugal and the Basque Country. Her style is rather spontaneous and poetic and strongly influenced by her passion for skateboarding and surfing.
Sunny’s motivation is creating meaningful connections through storytelling; between people and nature. Her work focusses on bringing the spectator into, and engaging them in a world they do not usually participate in.
Sunny has been working mainly with professional surfers in the past year and in projects for Ocean awareness such as WSL Pure grantee Regeneration Surf and Hope Zones Foundation. Her images portray extreme experiences in a rather sensorial way. This winter season 2022/2023 she is filming actively in the waves of Nazaré with the Athletes.
Apart from her passion for extreme sports and body awareness her ambition is combining ocean awareness and art through athletes and artists.
When did you first start your storytelling journey?
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
I grew up on the countryside in a small village surrounded by nature I was always free to explore life around me and I did so as much as I could and still am doing it as much as I can.
What path did you choose after leaving school?
I went to France to live by the ocean in summer and in the Mountains in winter then to Mexico to explore more and be by the ocean again and finally decided to study in the Basque Country in Spain to never leave the ocean again.
Who/what currently inspires you?
The ocean, its power, magnetism and endless life.
What current projects / stories are you working on?
#1 Joana Andrade and the giant waves of Nazaré.
#2 A documentary about the history of shaping and surfing of the Basque Country.
#3 A story telling proposal on a project for the regeneration of our Oceans (Regeneration Surf).
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
Create more awareness of what and whom surrounds us on a level of feeling, so the natural urge comes up to be in sync with nature and our human ecosystem.
Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, and that you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?
The Sea Around Us by Rachel Carson, Let my People go Surfing.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
Inspire others to take action for their life's and think for themselves; feel empowered to go their own path rather than the one that seems right by society. We need to think out of the box to create meaningful change.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?
Be in the ocean as much as you can and feel it as much as you can the story will tell itself through you. Trust yourself and surround yourself by the people you look up to. It’s always scary to do new things, but your emotional body will understand eventually and adapt to your vision.
