Victor Bezerra | Underwater Photographer & Videographer | Brazil
Victor is an epic underwater photographer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is also the founder of H2O Adventures, where he has been busy searching for the best diving spots in Brazil, capturing photos, and creating videos to raise awareness about the marine life that lives near the world’s urban beaches.
Currently, Victor is working on the accessibility side of diving, showing how snorkelling can be a huge door for every person despite age or physical shape to know the ocean. As a childhood brain cancer survivor, Victor felt free in and around the ocean, and he hopes to inspire others too.
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
One of my favourite memories is from the school holidays when my grandparents took me to visit a coastal city. I had survived brain cancer in childhood, and when I learned to snorkell I felt I could be free. From there my life changed.
What path did you choose after leaving school?
I went to university to study culinary arts, but I didn't fit in. Then I went to university to study graphic design, and there I rediscovered my passion for photography, which led me to ocean photography.
Who/what currently inspires you?
Sylvia Earle is my heroine. I'm absolutely inspired by her passion for the ocean and the way she puts all her efforts to save it.
Also, Jacques Cousteau's quote makes me want to show the underwater world to more and more people: "We only protect what we love, we only love what we understand, and we only understand what we are taught".
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
I would like to change the consumerism mindset that forces us to consume more and more disposable packaging. I would also like to solve the invasive species problem which affects different parts of the world, including Brazil.
Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, and that you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?
Many! Chasing Coral, Mission Blue, and Secrets of the Whales are some of my favourites!
What legacy do you hope to leave?
I hope to show people how beautiful the ocean is, and how IMPORTANT for our lives it is.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?
The path may be hard and sometimes exhausting, but your impact is priceless.
