Tim Wells | Freediver | Sustainability Advisor | Ocean Photographer | South Africa

Tim is a freediver and ocean photographer from Cape Town, South Africa. Currently, he is working in the De Hoop Nature Reserve just off the Southern tip of Africa as a sustainability advisor and guide.

Part of Tim’s job is the development of stories for the lodge he is based at. Tim explores and guides walks on an almost pristine coastline, often without a footprint in sight. He takes pictures and observes the natural world as a job and will forever be grateful for the time he has to generate stories on the Cape of Good Hope.

Through his stories and imagery, Tim looks forward to sharing them with our community.

When did you first start your storytelling journey?

I was born in Botswana, grew up in Namibia, and have studied and worked mostly in South Africa - and so I've always been fortunate to hear wonderful African stories around campfires... but taking on a job as a marine guide has allowed me to start making and telling my own stories.

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

Growing up surrounded by wilderness certainly shaped me and how I see the natural world - spending time fishing and camping, in particular, taught me the importance of maintaining a relationship with nature.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

I studied Applied Biology and Ecology at the University of Cape Town and managed to land a wonderful job working for a non-profit that introduces children to the ocean through a series of fun, structured activities. I've since moved into a role as a sustainability advisor to a high end lodge in the De Hoop nature reserve near the Southern tip of Africa where I am fortunate to be the marine guide to some of the most magical rock pools our coastline has to offer.

What/who currently inspires you?

I am privileged to be surrounded by inspirational people - both at work and in my personal life. Most of all I am inspired by nature - the patterns and resilience it shows always keeps me coming back for more.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

I'd love to change the way people perceive the natural world - to draw awareness to the fact that harming it is harming us. There is so much more we can do towards living sustainably, every little effort helps and should be praised.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, and that you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?

My Octopus Teacher has really shaped the way I connect with nature - from a passive observer to an interactive user.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

A legacy of happiness. Happiness comes from being present and sharing what we have with each other.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?

There are stories everywhere, you just need to spend time out there to see them.
