Kenzo Kiren | Scuba Diver | Underwater Photographer and Videographer | Canada | Mexico

Kenzo is from Vancouver BC Canada. He has recently embarked on a new chapter in life moving to Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Kenzo says that the ocean and wildlife there are absolutely spectacular and he has lots to explore. Kenzo has a few short story projects in the works and plans to build out some longer-form conservation pieces in the future. In addition to that Kenzo can be seen diving & freediving as much as possible soaking up the sun. So far, he is loving every minute of it!

What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?

My mum used to always tell me, travel is one of the best educations you can get. I took that to heart and still embody that to this day.

One of my first trips was a family vacation to Mexico where I first learned to swim. A few years later I fell in love with the ocean while visiting Hawaii. Travelling shaped my life from an early age and continues to bring a wealth of experiences and perspectives to my life. The countless memories and sights are priceless and I look forward to many more trips to come!

What path did you choose after leaving school?

Since becoming a pro hockey player didn't pan out, after high school I worked as a cook while going to University for Kinesiology & Fine Arts. My plan was to be a PE/Art teacher. A few years later while nearing the end of my degree I got offered the opportunity to become a chef at the restaurant. I was at a crossroad between 2 career choices... As fate would have it, right around that time I was on vacation diving the Caribbean. Upon returning I came across a contest which the grand prize included a 7 month dive instructor internship. Long story short, I won, quit my job and left school and booked a one way ticket to Bali, Indonesia. the rest they say is history.

What/who currently inspires you?

I continue to be inspired every single day. The growing community of humans falling deeper in love with the ocean, wildlife, and our world’s natural beauty constantly gives me the motivation to do more.

Some of my early inspirations were Jacques Cousteau, Jane Goodall, and Sylvia Earle. I was really inspired by Rob Stewart and his films as well as Ric O'Barry and the team at OPS who produced The Cove & Racing Extinction.

In addition to that, I'm blessed to be surrounded by many other ocean enthusiasts, creatives, and storytellers who continually put out amazing things in this world. There's so much beauty and so much to protect and cherish. What more inspiration do you need!

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking, you'd like to recommend to other ocean lovers?

Docos - Sharkwater, Racing Extinction, My Octopus Teacher.

Books - Deep, The Silent World.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

For animals to be respected and protected. For nature to get the preservation it deserves. For humans to choose love, compassion and kindness over profits, power and fear. My hope is that our oceans thrive for many generations to come.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an Ocean Storyteller?

Follow your bliss and make your passions a relentless pursuit!

What legacy do you hope to leave?

To leave the world a better brighter place and to spread as much love, positivity and laughter while I can.
