Enric Gener | 27mm | Photographer
Enric Gener was born in 1982 in Menorca, a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Growing up in this unique environment he then went on to study art and design at university, it was there he discovered his passion for photography
In 2009 he changed his lifestyle, bought an underwater camera and escaped from the city. Because his work is purely digital he started to work remotely. This has allowed him to live in many different places, but always close to the sea…
“My work is an iconography of my relationship with the sea.
My real passion is the sea, and after that, the photography. In that order, that it’s so important to me. But also, the photography is my partner on this. Sometimes it is so hard to walk, swim or travel with the camera. But other times is the camera that pushes you to walk farther, swim deeper or travel farther.
The sea is another world just one step to our normal life. Down there you start away to the deep and cold and dark and wet and blur. Where you are in constant movement and if it wasn’t enough you can not breathe. And suddenly a human been, apparently out of context, but at the same time capable to be closely connected to that infinite blue space.
27MM is my personal underwater photography project. Due to my addiction of unexpected feeling before jump into the sea, I devote myself into improvisations instead of posed or prepared photo shoot, presenting the interaction between people, animals and the sea, as well as the sensations to be under the water with calm, peace and silence.”
What's a typical day like for you?
Half a day working as a motionographer in my studio and half day in the sea. Always bringing the camera, but I don't use it always.
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
I live on a small island surrounded by the sea, and my father was always passionate about the sea. The sailing, swimming, diving...
What/who currently inspires you?
The life in and around the sea. Animals and Humans. Their behaviour their lifestyle.
What path did you choose after leaving school?
I moved away from the island where I was born, and I spent 6 years at the university and working. After that, I quit my job and became freelance to start my current lifestyle. Working remotely and always living close to the sea. I am always moving around the world, looking for new seas to discover.
What have been the biggest challenges you've had to overcome?
Finding a passion and a lifestyle thats fits in your personality. We grow up with too many cliches and it is hard work to erase them and build something new.
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
Overfishing and over-production of plastic.
What do you value most in life?
Time, without doubt.
Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?
No really, I have always been a bad reader; my parents didn’t read newspapers or have many books at home. But one thing was mandatory: every month we had the National Geographic magazine at home. Because we never traveled, that magazine was my window to the world and a door to the imagination.
What brings you the most joy?
Swimming or freediving with pelagic sea life.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
Respect and love for the sea.
