James Thompson | Photographer | Jersey UK
“I am a thrill seeking person who just so happens to own a camera. My love for taking images started with owning a disposable camera and built over time to where it is today, where my camera is very rarely away from my side and I spend most of my time running around like a lunatic chasing an idea that I want to share through my lens. In between this I have studied photography at A Level and self taught myself new techniques in an attempt to create pictures that I get excited about.
Growing up on the Island of Jersey I aim to take pictures of scenes that most people miss in their day to day rush of life. I want to show people how I see the world and its beauty whether it’s the way a wave crashes against the rocks or a mountain biker speeding through the trees. My Island is a small place only 45sq miles but so much is missed by so many and whilst they take the views for granted I still have to pinch myself when the sun sets over the harbour or the waves crash on the golden beaches.”
What’s a typical day like for you?
No two days are ever the same but usually I'm either in a gym, behind a camera or ideally in the ocean!
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
Being in water from before I can even remember, it is still now the place I feel at peace, nothing even comes close to it. I've always loved the sea and the sense of adventure it brings.
What do you value most in life?
Health, Respect and Kindness. The little gestures in life can go a long way.
What/who currently inspires you?
Other creatives out there. Looking at an image that just makes my jaw drop and sit back and think wow.
What path did you choose after leaving school?
Initially I went to university to be a mechanical engineer however missed being active and being by the ocean too much so stopped, came back to Jersey and worked on boats and or in gyms ever since and do not regret it.
What have been the biggest challenges you've had to overcome?
Being told I can't do something or shouldn't try. At so many points in my life have I been told I'm not capable of doing something by others. It used to get me down and stop me from doing what I love. I've learnt to not let it bother me and now usually prove these people wrong and if not then I can feel proud for trying.
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
People's understanding and appreciation for the earth. We have the most amazing beaches, oceans and landscapes yet I see people litter, pollute and show no appreciation for it. People need to understand the damage they do when they drop a plastic bag or a cigarette butt and also appreciate the earth otherwise its beauty will soon be lost.
Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?
Little bit cliché but anything by David Attenborough. Blue planet especially is just inspiring.
What brings you the most joy?
The ocean, photography and being able to capture something truly special. That moment when everything comes together and you feel at peace with yourself. This is something that the ocean does for me. My fondest memories are all of the sea.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
Even if one of my pictures can inspire or impact a person then I will feel I have achieved something.
