Ryan Sault | Underwater Photographer | North America

Currently based in North America, nomadic Ryan’s days are always different. Wether it’s adventuring underwater, exploring national parks, or driving around in his van; the evenings usually includes watching a sunset with a couple beers.

As a child growing up in Australia, Ryan used to sit on the shore and watch his father dive beneath the waves. He would emerge soon after full of stories about all the unique and creatures below. Ryan’s first dive was encouraged by his dad, only to about 2 meters, but Ryan was blown away by what he saw. “From that day I was hooked!” And so began his underwater adventures…

When did you first start documenting your ocean story?

It wasn’t long after getting SCUBA certified that I picked up my first underwater camera and started documenting what I saw. My first camera wasn’t expensive, it was one of the early GoPros, and my photos and footage were pretty substandard to say the least. But I enjoyed sharing and with the support of my family and friends my love for underwater photography took off. It didn't take long before I had a DSLR in my hand and was travelling the globe and photographing the incredible underwater world.

What path did you choose after leaving school?

After school I spent a year travelling Europe before studying an engineering degree at university, then spent 10 years working in the green energy industry trying to minimize our impact on the planet. I've since shifted my focus completely to underwater photography.

What do you value most in life?

An adventure through the day finished with a few relaxing beers in the afternoon.

What brings you the most joy?

Getting up close and personal with all the incredible underwater animals.

What/who currently inspires you?

Jacques Cousteau still inspires me. He had a ship, helicopter and submarine and spent his life exploring the oceans.

What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?

I'd love to be able to change peoples negative views and perceptions of sharks. They are an extremely important part of their ecosystem.

Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?

You can't go past David Attenborough. But Jacques Cousteau has also played a big part in guiding my thinking and understanding of our underwater world.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

I hope that my photography and stories can inspire people to want to explore our oceans, but most importantly I hope it inspires them to protect our oceans.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?
You don't need the best gear or equipment to start telling your story. So don't hesitate if it's something that you want to do. Dive right in.
